Webinar: From Genetics to Gastrointestinal Involvement — Family Ties, Bowel and Appendix Endometriosis

This discussion explores the genetic and familial aspects of endometriosis, how the disease can involve the bowel and appendix, and the importance of tracking symptoms across different parts of the body.

What Two Sisters’ Surgeries Reveal About the Genetics and Full-Body Impact of Endometriosis

Episode 7 of The Endo Exchange features Dr. Karli Provost Goldstein and Dr. Daniel Marcus in conversation with Bailey and Devyn Steeves, patient advocates who underwent endometriosis excision surgery after years of disruptive symptoms—in a rare same-day surgical collaboration, the sisters underwent surgery at the same time.

This discussion examines the genetic and familial aspects of endometriosis, its impact on the bowel and appendix, and the importance of monitoring symptoms throughout the body.

Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Marcus share how a multidisciplinary surgical approach was used to confirm and treat Bailey and Devyn’s endometriosis, including deep lesions on the rectum, ovaries, uterus, and appendix. Bailey and Devyn’s experience highlights how even siblings with the same disease can present with entirely different symptoms—and why integrative, collaborative care is key to healing.

Devyn Steeves

Patient Advocate & Endometriosis Survivor

Devyn Steeves is a patient advocate who shares her experience with endometriosis to support others navigating similar challenges. She underwent excision surgery after years of disruptive symptoms, alongside her sister, in a coordinated effort led by Dr. Karli Provost Goldstein and Dr. Daniel Marcus. Their case underscored the genetic connection in endometriosis and how symptoms can vary widely, even between close family members.

Devyn now helps others better understand the importance of family health history, symptom tracking, and early specialist care. She is committed to helping patients feel heard, informed, and supported as they seek answers and appropriate treatment.

Bailey Steeves

Patient Advocate & Endometriosis Survivor

Bailey Steeves is a patient advocate whose journey with endometriosis is deeply tied to her family’s story. Though her mother passed when Bailey was young, she vividly remembers her describing painful periods, memories that would later become meaningful clues. When Bailey began experiencing her own symptoms, she recognized similar patterns in herself and her sister, prompting her to investigate the genetic links of endometriosis.

With the guidance of Dr. Karli Provost Goldstein, Bailey pursued a diagnosis and underwent excision surgery, an experience that empowered her to encourage her sister to seek care as well. Their journey reflects how endometriosis can run in families, yet present differently in each person.

Today, Bailey shares her story to shed light on the role of genetics in endometriosis and to encourage others to trust their instincts, explore their family health history, and advocate for early, specialized care. She is committed to making others feel seen, informed, and supported as they navigate their own reproductive health journeys.
