Hi, I’m Dr. Amanda Chu
Board-Certified OB/GYN & Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgeon
Each patient’s journey is unique, and I’m honored to be trusted as part of that experience. I carry that philosophy into my work at ESSE Care and Wellness, where I specialize in treating complex conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, infertility, and chronic pelvic pain—conditions that are often misunderstood, minimized, or misdiagnosed. My goal is to change that experience for you and help you find clarity and relief.
Many of my patients have spent years searching for answers. At ESSE Care, we offer more than just surgical plans. We provide a safe, supportive space where you can feel heard, informed, and involved in every decision. Whether you’re preparing for surgery, seeking a second opinion, or simply hoping to be taken seriously, I’m here to support your journey with skill, honesty, and compassion.
My Journey into Gynecologic Surgery
For me, medicine has always been about more than treating symptoms. It brings together what matters most to me: science, empathy, hands-on skill, and the ability to show up for people when they need it most.
I was drawn to gynecologic surgery by both personal experience and clinical curiosity. In the culture I grew up in, topics like menstruation and mental health weren’t discussed, even when they affected daily life. That silence pushed me to care for people whose symptoms are often dismissed, especially in underrepresented communities.
I earned my BA at Cornell, received my MD at SUNY Stony Brook, and completed residency at Lenox Hill Hospital. I went on to complete a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at Penn State Health, where I focused on complex pelvic pain, endometriosis, fibroids, and infertility. I returned to New York City in 2021 to join a well-regarded endometriosis-focused surgery practice. Each step brought me closer to this work—restoring function, reducing pain, and helping patients feel truly seen.
Why I Fell in Love with Gynecologic Surgery
What drew me in was the complexity; what keeps me passionate is the lasting impact on patients’ lives.
For many of my patients, the conditions we treat—endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, chronic pelvic pain—are not just physical. They affect relationships, careers, self-confidence, and fertility. By the time many patients get to me, they’ve been told their symptoms are normal or that nothing can be done. I know that’s not true.
Through precise, minimally invasive surgery, I can help restore anatomy, reduce pain, and preserve or support fertility. But the most rewarding part is helping someone feel heard and validated after a long road of being dismissed. This work isn’t just about what I do in the OR—it’s about walking with patients through some of their most vulnerable and defining moments. That’s what makes it meaningful.
What Patients Can Expect From Me
Every patient is different, and that’s where our work begins. When we meet, I want to understand not just your symptoms but how you prefer to receive information, what you’re worried about, and what matters most to you. Some people want to walk through every detail; others prefer a clear path forward. I will take your lead.
I provide structure and guidance, not assumptions. I offer the guardrails, and you decide how to move within them. I always share evidence-based recommendations, but the decisions we make reflect your goals, comfort level, and lived experience. I understand that trusting a new provider takes time, especially when you’re facing a new diagnosis or managing a long-standing condition.
My approach centers on restoring anatomy using minimally invasive techniques. Every procedure focuses on removing disease while preserving fertility and function, with visual documentation confirming complete treatment results. When appropriate, we collaborate with our trusted surgical partners in specialties such as bowel, urologic, or other surgical fields, because when the disease spreads beyond the uterus, a multidisciplinary team is needed to provide the most comprehensive care possible.
I often work with pelvic floor therapists, acupuncturists, mental health professionals, and nutritionists because healing is not about one system or one moment. It is about treating the whole person.
Why I Joined ESSE Care and Wellness
What drew me to ESSE was the feeling that this wasn’t just another medical practice; it was a place where care is both expert and deeply personal. At ESSE, surgeons don’t just operate. We listen. We collaborate. We meet patients where they are and build plans that reflect their full experience—not just their diagnosis.
As an endometriosis specialist, I was looking for a team that shared my values: evidence-based care, integrative support, and a strong belief in treating the whole person. These conditions affect the whole body—immune function, the nervous system, the gut—and they deserve to be treated as systemic diseases.
At ESSE, that’s the standard. We’re aligned in how we approach surgery, how we work together, and how we show up for patients who have often gone too long without answers. I’m grateful to be part of a practice that’s redefining what gynecologic care can feel like.
A Personal Note
I live in Queens with my two very spirited cats, Louie and Frankie, and I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. Outside of work, you’ll usually find me reading, listening to live music, spending time outdoors, sharing meals with friends and family, traveling, or trying a new dish. These rituals keep me grounded and remind me that joy, connection, and curiosity are essential parts of healing too.
A quote that continues to guide my practice is: You can’t see what you don’t know. I truly believe that medical education doesn’t end with training—it starts there. The best learning happens in the real world, in conversation, and often by listening closely to the people we care for. My patients have taught me so much about what these conditions really feel like and how they affect the body in ways that medicine is only beginning to understand.
