Post-Op Medications & Pain Management
We get a lot of questions from patients about what to expect after surgery—especially when it comes to managing pain and discomfort. Here are some general guidelines to help you feel more prepared and supported during your recovery.
What to Expect
On the day of your surgery, your provider will typically send you home (or to your hotel, if you’re traveling) with a selection of medications and supplements. These are meant to ease pain, support digestion, and help your body begin healing smoothly.
While specifics will vary, this often includes:
- Pain relievers
- Anti-inflammatory medication
- Stool softeners or laxatives
- Gas or bloating relief
- Supplements to support digestion and recovery
Managing Pain Effectively
Your care team will provide detailed instructions on how and when to take each medication. One common strategy is alternating two types of pain medications every few hours—this can help keep discomfort well controlled without overmedicating.
