Surgical Footage from a Multi-Organ Endometriosis Surgery
This video series shows real footage from a complex, 9-hour excision surgery involving multiple organ systems. These cases require a collaborative team approach to safely and thoroughly remove disease while preserving organ function.
Performed by Dr. Karli Provost Goldstein, with urologic and thoracic surgical partners, this case involved extensive endometriosis affecting the pelvic, abdominal, and thoracic cavities. The surgical team used minimally invasive techniques to assess and treat disease that had spread well beyond the reproductive organs.
What this surgical footage reveals:
- Endometriosis implants, inflammation, and multiple fenestrations (holes) on the diaphragm
- Endometriosis involving the pleura (the lining around the lungs)
- Herniation of the liver into the chest cavity
- Dense fibrosis throughout the thoracic cavity
- A frozen pelvis with endometriomas and adhesions
- A severely dilated ureter due to hydroureter from obstruction
- Mobilization of the rectum, sigmoid colon, bowel, and kidney
- Diaphragm repair and restoration of abdominal organ positioning
- Temporary stent placement to avoid permanent ureteral reimplantation
- Use of a chest tube, Foley catheter, and pelvic drain during recovery
